The University of the Middle East Project (UME) is an independent, 501(c)(3), non-governmental organization which, for over a decade, has been contributing to the creation of inclusive and egalitarian classrooms in secondary schools across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). UME’s institutes equip teachers with the skills and knowledge to broaden young peoples’ minds. Through preparing new generations for a global community and world economy, UME’s alumni are paving a sustainable path for growth and stability in the MENA region.
UME was founded in 1997 by a group of Harvard graduate students originally from the Middle East and North Africa. They came together over a unique and ambitious vision: to dramatically advance critical and creative thinking, cross-cultural understanding, and collaboration through centers of higher learning for social leaders throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Since then, UME’s cutting-edge teacher training has benefited more than 200 educators, over 150 high schools, and thousands of young people from across the region.
