The 2009 Civic Engagement Workshop which took place in Beirut, Lebanon, during the first week of January 2009,  was completed successfully. It brought together 4 American teachers from the Boston Area and Providence, R.I., and seven Lebanese teachers on the campus of the Amercican University of Beirut.

Update on admissions for the Collaborative Art Initiative:

  • MENA.  Admissions decisions for UME Alumni in the MENA decision have been taken.  If you applied to the CAI and have not received notification of your admissions status, please contact UME staff.  The application pool for the CAI was extremely competitive.
  • U.S.  The deadline for applications from American educators has been extended.  The requirements have also been changed in response to strong interest by educational professionals working outside of secondary schools.  Please refer to http://www.ume.org/applications for more information.

intellectual freedom, civil discourse and expression of ideas in the Middle East.

  • the marketplace of ideas: mass media and identity
  • writers and scholars at risk: personal accounts
  • the future: freedom of expression in a global community
